Nicosia is the only European capital without a coastline or an airport on its doorstep, which makes getting around — and getting out — a little different from other Cypriot cities. Here's how to move through the capital easily and use it as a base for the rest of the island.
Why a car makes Nicosia easier
The city centre is walkable and the old town is best on foot, but Nicosia spreads out, and the attractions worth seeing — the Troodos mountains, the coast, ancient sites — are all a short drive away rather than a walk or a single bus ride. A car turns "maybe one day trip" into "a different place every afternoon".
The public-transport reality
Buses cover Nicosia and link the main towns, but services are less frequent in the evenings and on Sundays, and there's no train or metro anywhere in Cyprus. For city errands buses are fine; for day trips on your own schedule, your own car is far less stressful.
Easy pickup, no airport queues
We keep collection simple: every car is picked up and returned at our Nicosia office on Aglantzias 81, with the paperwork prepared in advance so you're on the road within minutes. There are no airport counters and no scattered car parks — just one central handover point.
Parking in the city
Around the old town and the centre you'll find pay-and-display bays and several multi-storey car parks; a single blue or white line usually means paid parking and double yellows mean no stopping. Outside the centre, parking is generally free and easy, which makes hotels and the newer districts simple to reach by car.
Day trips you can reach from Nicosia
From the capital you're roughly 45 minutes to the beaches and old town of Larnaca, about an hour up into the pine forests and villages of the Troodos mountains, and within easy reach of wineries, monasteries and the Mesaoria plain. Having a car means you can leave after breakfast and be back for dinner.
